When is Free Snowmobile Weekend in Maine?
Each year, riders from across New England (and beyond!) look forward to Free Snowmobile Weekend in Maine, where riders from any state or province can operate their snowmobile in Maine as long as they have valid registration from another state or province. This means if your sled is registered in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Brunswick- you name it- you can come on over to Maine and ride without registering in Maine, for this weekend only. Maine.gov does ask that you “register” for the event so we can keep track of how many folks visit- you can do that right here!
Free Snowmobile Weekend is March 7-9, 2025
Maine is known for incredible snowmobiling, with a 14,000 mile trail network maintained by local clubs that takes you to some of Maine’s best kept secrets. You can see it all by sled here – from quaint little towns to breathtaking scenery, and maybe even a moose or deer along the way! We recommend sticking around for the long weekend to get a couple full days of riding in – and we have plenty of ride recommendations to keep you busy! One pick? Take a trip to Grand Falls, then head over to Eustis for lunch at Tea Pond Cabins. Make your way back to Northern Outdoors to end your day with a hearty dinner and cold beer from the Kennebec River Pub & Brewery, located on site. After you’re done, head back to your cabin just behind the lodge- then get ready to do it all again in the morning!
We have a wide selection of cabin rentals on-site, from a cozy cabin for two to a 4 bedroom cabin that sleeps 16. All of our cabins are trailside, with groomed access to ITS 87 and beyond. Oh- and did you know The Forks Area Trails Club has two groomers right on site here at Northern Outdoors? We’re telling you- Northern Outdoors is the made for snowmobilers!
If you’re the one in your group that DOESN’T have a sled, don’t sweat it- we have a line up of new model Polaris sleds for rent on-site, single and 2 up, through our friends at 201 Powersports.
Whether you visit for Free Snowmobile Weekend, or some other time, we hope to see you on the trails this winter. Be sure to check out the event on Facebook and get a trip on the books!

Do we need to register for the free weekend?
Hi Georges- no, during free weekend you do not need to register your sled in Maine in order to ride the trails in Maine, so long as your sled IS registered in a different state/province.
