Snowmobile Trail Conditions Report: The Forks, Maine March 2020
THE FORKS TRAIL REPORT 3/12/2020
The trails around The Forks have deteriorated significantly in the past week, due to the warmer temperatures and strong sunshine. The trail system between The Forks and Moxie Dam is in poor shape. The trail is down to the hard pack/ice base, with some bald spots starting to show.
ITS 86 from Moxie Dam going toward Greenville, and the Bald Mtn and Pleasant Pond Trails still have ok snow and half decent riding. If you want to get out for that last spring ride, that’s where you should go.
This report is for conditions as of Thursday morning. We are expecting some rain showers on Friday, so trails will deteriorate further.
ITS 86 EAST FROM BERRY’S STORE HEADING EAST TOWARD GREENVILLE/ROCKWOOD TO ITS 88 JUNCTION
From Berry’s store to Moxie Dam is in poor shape. Lot of ice and some short bare spots where the sun has beat through the trail base. From Moxie Dam on, the trail is in better shape with more snow and much less ice.
ITS 87 HEADING SOUTH TOWARD BINGHAM
Trail is down to the hard pack/ice base. Some short bare spots. Poor condition. After this weekend (on Monday 3/16) ITS 87 south will be closed with no through traffic to Bingham. A logging operation will start on ITS 87 where it crosses Route 16 in Moscow.
CARATUNK SPUR
Passable but in poor shape
PLEASANT POND TRAIL
Mostly on unplowed roads . . . . . decent riding.
BALD MOUNTAIN TRAIL
Mostly unplowed roads and has decent riding. There is no connection off the south end of the BMT to the Wind Mills in Bingham, as there has been in the past. Only access to the Wind Mills is a trail off ITS 87 north of Bingham. The Bald Mtn Trail combined with the Pleasant Pond Trail form a great loop ride between ITS 86 and ITS 87.
BREAKNECK RIDGE TRAIL
Like the BMT and PPT, it has decent riding on our end. Not sure how the east side is.
KENNEBEC RIVER TRAIL FROM NORTHERN OUTDOORS TO BERRY’S STORE
It is passable, but in poor shape with ice and some bare spots. Not recommended for sleds without picks as there are a couple hills that are sheer ice. Suicide Hill off the Flood Road is down to dirt.

THE FORKS TRAIL REPORT 3/4/2020
Both Tuckers were out nightly right through the past weekend and on Monday, and we were able to keep the trails in good shape considering the very heavy weekend traffic. Things warmed up Tuesday and Wednesday and we were not able to get out and groom. Temps are dropping and it will remain cool at night right through the upcoming weekend. Both groomers will be out Thursday night and throughout the weekend. Overall the trails are still in decent shape. There may be an icy spot here and there due to the melting early this week, and subsequent freeze up. But there is some great spring riding to be enjoyed!
Intown is in fair shape after grooming. However, because of heavy traffic day and night, intown gets beat up quickly. Once out of town about 1 mile, things improve greatly. The 1 mile Power Line section at Lake Moxie is in good shape. From Moxie Dam up to ITS 88 junction is mostly on unplowed roads and is great riding.
ITS 87 HEADING SOUTH TOWARD BINGHAM
Boise Road and Divide Road sections are in good shape. Short woods sections at Pleasant Pond and Moore’s Bog are fair to good. Rest of the way south towards Bingham is a nice ride.
CARATUNK SPUR
Open and well groomed.
PLEASANT POND TRAIL
Mostly on unplowed roads . . . . . sweet riding!
BALD MOUNTAIN TRAIL
Mostly unplowed roads and is in great shape.
Open and groomed and in good shape.
KENNEBEC RIVER TRAIL FROM NORTHERN OUTDOORS TO BERRY’S STORE
Open and groomed. Mostly in good shape. A little rough as you approach town.
